Outlook

The automotive industry worldwide is undergoing rapid change marked by technological innovation, fuel efficiency and safety improvements and new market participants.

In 2009, the Obama Administration launched a new program to boost fuel efficiency standards of the automotive industry (CAFÉ—four years ahead of schedule and up from an average of 25 miles per gallon at that time.)

The standards what are being developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) will impose a limit on greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles for the first time.

Obstacles & Opportunities

The automotive industry remains under pressure to do more.

The auto industry is committed to improvements. But, only through certainty in legislation and the existence of one universal standard will it be possible to achieve the greatest breakthroughs in the most time and cost efficient and cost effective manner.

There is rapid commercial deployment of new vehicle technologies like hybrid, plug-in electric vehicles, advanced diesels and hydrogen vehicles.

World-wide investments of over $85 Billion (2008) in new vehicle technologies, fuel efficiency, and safety improvements continue to position the automotive industry as the leading industrial sector in research development and demonstration RD&D.

These investments are giving way to rapid commercial deployment of new alternate vehicle technologies, including hybrid, plug-in electric vehicles and advanced diesels.
